Our team recently headed to Detroit, Michigan, for the Biogas Americas Conference, and the energy on the floor was undeniable. The overarching theme? The incredible scaling potential of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) and the shifting economics making these projects more lucrative than ever.
Here is a quick look at the major trends shaping the industry and how we are driving the movement forward.
The Big Drivers: 45Z and New Markets
The buzz in the breakout sessions centered heavily on operational economics, scaling, and capitalizing on fresh revenue streams. Two major topics dominated the conversation:
Back to Basics: Why RNG and CHP are a Perfect Match
For those new to the space, renewable natural gas is biogas captured from organic waste (like landfills, wastewater treatment plants, or agricultural digesters) that is purified to match the quality of conventional natural gas.
But refining biogas into renewable natural gas requires a lot of energy. That is where CHP (Combined Heat and Power) units come in.
The CHP Advantage: A CHP system generates both electricity and thermal energy on-site from a single fuel source. By utilizing a CHP unit within an RNG project, operators can power the purification process using their own waste heat and electricity. This drastically lowers operational costs and improves the project’s Carbon Intensity (CI) score—which directly translates to higher payouts under incentives like the 45Z credit.
A Proven Track Record of Growth
The renewable natural gas market has achieved remarkably stable and impressive growth over the past five years. Driven by global decarbonization mandates and robust incentive frameworks, this momentum isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
We’ve been ahead of the curve for years. We have successfully deployed CHP systems in renewable natural gas projects worldwide. Right here in the USA, we are proud to partner with Kinsley Energy Systems to deliver high-efficiency CHP solutions that make renewable natural gas projects cleaner, smarter, and significantly more profitable.
